How It Began

Hi, I’m Coulton Becker, owner of Studio Becker.

Woodworking wasn’t always a dream of mine. At least, not until a few years ago.

In March of 2017, my father, Bob Becker, passed away from cancer. A farmer by trade, he was constantly working with his hands and always found creative ways to solve the problems standing in his way.

After his passing, I found myself looking for a way to deal with that loss, approaching the situation in the same way my father approached every issue he faced - creatively. I got to work designing and constructing a memorial for him, entitled “Fluss Ewig.” This German phrase translates to “constantly changing,” the only way to aptly describe my life at the time.

I had never built anything like this before. As an architectural studies major, I had experience designing creative buildings and creating models, but never had the opportunity to bring any of my designs to life on a large scale. The moment I took a step back from the completed memorial, I realized my passion for woodworking.

It’s Just A Piece of Wood, Right?

When I start a project it’s more than just a piece of wood or furniture. It’s a piece of your home that will create memories through generations.

A dining table becomes a place of gathering with friends and family, playing games, and having parties. A coffee table becomes a centerpiece to your living room to unwind and rest. A lamp becomes a light source you use to read that book you’ve been wanting to read for weeks.

And while these all are pieces that are functional, they have a story to tell with there wood grain, where it was sourced, how it was made, and the memories that you create with them.
